Frequently Asked Questions

Below are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions to help you understand what to expect. If you don’t see your question listed, feel free to contact us — we're here to help!

What do I need to get a document notarized?

You’ll need:

  • A valid, government-issued photo ID (driver’s license, passport, or military ID)

  • A completed document leaving the signature for the notary appointment

  • An unsigned document (sign in front of the notary)

  • All parties present and willing to sign

  • Be aware of what you're signing

  • Matching names on ID and document

  • Payment at the time of service

Can you notarize my document if I don’t know what type it is?

We cannot provide legal advice, but we can tell you the most common notarization types:

  • Acknowledgment – You acknowledge you signed the document willingly.

  • Jurat – You swear the contents of the document are true.

  • Copy Certification – We verify that a copy of your document is a true copy.

If unsure, contact the document issuer or a legal professional.

Do you notarize legal and personal documents?

Yes, we notarize a variety of documents including:

  • Power of Attorney

  • Living Wills / Last Wills

  • Divorce Decrees

  • Loan Signings / Real Estate Docs

  • Affidavits, Consent Forms

  • Titles, Bills of Sale

  • Mortgage & Refinance Docs

  • And more!

What Documents Can Be Notarized?

Most documents can be notarized, as long as they contain the proper notarial wording required by Virginia law. If the correct language is missing, I can provide the appropriate wording to complete the notarization. However, vital records such as birth certificates, marriage licenses, and death certificates cannot be notarized. Notaries are also prohibited from certifying copies of these records. If you need an official copy, you must request it directly from the government agency that issued the document.

Why are you charging? I thought notaries were free?

Notary fees vary by state. In Virginia, the maximum per notarization is $10 for official acts such as:

  • Verifying and certifying signatures

  • Administering oaths or affirmations

  • Certifying affidavits and depositions

  • Attesting to true copies of documents (except vital records)

Since I offer mobile notary services, a reasonable travel fee is also applied based on distance. Some appointments may require multiple notarizations, which can increase the total cost.

Can I Get Documents Notarized at My Bank?

Yes, many banks provide notary services to their account holders. However, they often limit notarizations to documents related to bank transactions, such as loan agreements or financial paperwork. If you need a Will, Power of Attorney, or other legal document notarized, a bank may decline the request.

For greater convenience, flexibility, and availability, I offer mobile notary services, traveling to homes, offices, hospitals, and other locations at times that work for you.

Do you travel to me?

Yes! We are a mobile notary service based in Amelia County, VA, and we travel within a 40-mile radius of zip code 23002.

Do you service hospitals, jails, nursing homes, and private residences?

Yes, we travel to homes, offices, care facilities, and more. The signer must be present, alert, and able to understand the document.
